YDA's Women's Caucus Celebrates Women's History Month

Celebrate the Woman Activist in Your Life By Nominating Her to Be Profiled

(cross-posted from email from Jacqueline Kozin)

This March, young Democratic women in America can include two more important woman milestones on their lists of inspiration: this country has its first female Speaker of the House and one of the top presidential candidates is a woman. While Speaker Pelosi and Senator Clinton give pause for celebration, one should not break out the party hats and noisemakers just yet as the big picture for women in political leadership positions is a sobering one.

Of the 535 seats in Congress, 85 are occupied by women (71 in the House, 14 in the Senate) and that is considered a record. Looking at where women are in state government, there are only 8 women who serve as governors, 15 women as lieutenant governors and 15 women as chief justices of the state's highest court.

Although the numbers are not where they should be, there are many young Democratic women who are working to widen these margins on a variety of levels. And with your help, the Women's Caucus of the Young Democrats of America (YDA) will honor them this month by publishing profiles of them.

The Women's Caucus would like to invite members to submit the name of a young Democratic woman who you know is working to bring progress to your community. She could be a union organizer, campaign worker, chief of staff for a local politician, a member of the Board of Education, a mother fighting for change in public policy, a town/city council member, an outspoken leader for a local charity or organization. She is a voice and positive force working for progress for all.

"It's important to honor women like Speaker Pelosi and Senator Clinton for the trails they have blazed for women in politics," remarked Atima Omara-Alwala, Chair of the Women's Caucus. "But like Speaker Pelosi and Senator Clinton who both started their political careers when they were young, it is important to recognize the next generation of women blazing new trails, for in this group is a future Party Chair, House Speaker, Governor...or President."

One woman from each of the YDA geographic regions (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Southcentral, Great Lakes, Southwest, Pacific, and the Midwest) will be selected and profiled. If you would like to make a nomination, please answer the questions in the attached form and email it to Communications Director of YDA Women's Caucus, Jacqueline Kozin, jacquelinek [at] gmail [dot] com, by Friday, March 9th, 2007.

###

The Women's Caucus of the Young Democrats of America promotes the involvement of young women in the political process; to promote efforts to make the political process more inclusive and more effective at the local level; and to support women who live up to the principles of the WCYDA, the YDA, and the Democratic party.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month

From: ydawomen@yahoogroups.com On Behalf Of Atima Omara-Alwala
To: ydawomen@yahoogroups.com

Notice to the Women's Caucus of the Young Democrats of America:

APRIL IS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS & PREVENTION MONTH

  • Every 2.5 minutes, another American is sexually assaulted. One in six women and one in 33 men will be victims of sexual assault or rape in their lifetime.
  • 80% of rape victims are under the age of 30
  • 1 out of every 5 college women report being forced to have sexual intercourse

What Young Democrats Can Do!

As young democrats we are politically active in our communities, many of us are uniquely suited to lend our knowledge and/influence to move legislation in states regarding sexual assault laws, safety on school campuses, and ready access to emergency contraception for sexual assault survivors. Attached is a brief sheet compiled by the Women's Caucus Campaign Director, Yesenia Rosado, as to what Young Democrat chapters can do to recognize the importance of this Awareness Month, and what you can do year round!

For further information on how you can help:

RAINN  www.rainn.org . The National Sexual Assault Hotline

National Sexual Violence Resource Center  www.nsvrc.org

State Sexual Assault Coalitions: http://www.usdoj.gov/ovw/statesexual.htm (for those state chapters who want to be more active on a regular basis, there are coalitions to join)

Democratically Yours,

Atima Omara-Alwala

The Young Democrats of America (YDA) Minority Caucus gives a lodging and registration stipend for young Democrats of color to attend national meetings, conventions and regional events. The YDA Minority Caucus created this fund to provide financial assistance and scholarship to worthy youth of color.

All applicants for these scholarships must be (1) a member of a Young Democrat local, municipal, state, college, or nationally affiliated chapter or unit, (2) show ability and commitment for organizing and empowering young people within the Democratic Party, (3) must be a YOUNG DEMOCRAT OF COLOR, who self-identifies with a predominant minority group (African, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, Mid-Eastern ancestry), and (4) must commit one (1) calendar year of service to the YDA Minority Caucus, either through volunteer and/or programmatic work or through a Caucus Committee.

Each applicant will be considered for stipends for which he or she qualifies. The Empowerment Fund application deadline is October 30, 2006. Scholarships are competitive and will be distributed appropriately.
