YDWA banquet shows young electeds and Congressional hopeful
by Aaron Belenky (WA)
YDWA has seen many of its members run for and serve in elected office, including U.S. Senator Warren Magnuson and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. At this year’s Banquet, the grand finale to our annual convention of 160 young democrats from across Washington, we welcomed two newly-elected County Commissioners under the age of 30, Kitsap County Commissioner Josh Brown and Cowlitz County Commissioner Axel Swanson.
Having graduated for the University of California at Berkeley, Josh Brown returned to his home in Kitsap County and jumped in the political arena to beat a conservative Republican in a growing, swing county. He overcame a post-election legal challenge by Republicans, and has been serving the residents of Kitsap County tirelessly ever since.
Axel Swanson, having compiled an impressive resume serving in the Marine Reserves and obtaining both Masters’ and Law Degrees in quick succession, decided to run for Cowlitz County Commissioner in 2006. He knocked on thousands of doors and hit the campaign trail hard, handily beating a Republican incumbent in a tough race. Since his election, he has proven to be an ardent public servant, stepping forward as an advocate in his county of a range of tough issues.
Josh and Axel spoke about their experiences running for office as young candidates and the importance of young people’s perspective in the political process.
YDWA also was pleased to welcome George Fearing, a candidate for the U.S. Congress from Central Washington’s 4th Congressional District. An attorney, longtime active Democrat, and former intern for Senator Warren Magnuson and Rep. Tom Foley, George is challenging the 4th District’s Rep. Doc Hastings, pledging to fight to fund education, expand health care coverage, and protect our economy.

Young Dem Action for Food Service Workers
On Wednesday, May 30, 2007, the Ann Arbor School Board is scheduled to approve the outsourcing and termination of 73 long-time food service workers. They are considering outsourcing to a foreign company Compass group the largest food service provider in the world.
MYD is encouraging members of the community to attend the school board meeting on Wednesday, May 30th2007 and contact the board members. MYD is urging the board to reject the outsourcing proposal. As the board seeks to balance the budget, MYD has learned that the district's proposal has a disproportionate impact on the women in the food services department. The district is asking the women to take a 30% reduction in wages and benefits to avoid privatization. While other departments get raises, the lowest paid employees are being crushed and fired. They will lose their pension if the privatization proposal is approved.
School Board President Karen Cross, Helen Gates-Bryant (former union leader), and Glenn Nelson (grey panther) are Democrats. Democrat Susan Basket is committed to opposing the proposal. The community must convince these 3 Dems that privatization is not the best option. The Teamsters Lunch ladies, who are also members of the Michigan State AFL-CIO, are willing to negotiate 10% reductions in benefits and wages. They are team players. But asking for 30% cuts is too severe and unfair.
The community must also stand up for the students in Ann Arbor. Food quality, health and safety are compromised when you lose long time employees to privatization. MYD believes the board should retain workers we know and trust to interact with children.
MAKE A STAND AGAINST OUTSOURCING!
DO NOT FIRE THE FOOD SERVICE WORKERS!
Stand with the Young Democrats, Teamster 214 Food service workers, Rev. Charles E. Williams II, Women's right's activists, parents, teachers, clergy, and community members!

Ann Arbor Board of Education Meeting
Arrive between 6:15 pm and 6:30 pm
Board meeting begins at 7:30 pm
District Library, 4th Floor Board
343 South Fifth Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI
RSVP to <email>
or call 313-530-3082 for more info
Action Steps -
1. Call and e-mail Karen Cross, Board President at 734-741-4480 and <email>
(very important - she is key)
1. Call and e-mail the other 6 board members - urge them not to outsource the lunch ladies, urge them to balance the budget in a more even handed way (please review talking points)
2. Please mobilize people to attend rally and board meeting on Wednesday, May 30th - each us need to ARRIVE with FIVE!
3. Forward this information to all your friends and contacts -
Here is some info/talking points about the proposal: Privatization will costs schools more. There are hidden costs and indirect costs. Contractors often price-gouge in future contract negotiations. Food workers supervisor children in one on one situations. The Schools will have to hire additional supervisors. Richmond , VA schools lost $900,000.00 during the first year of their contract with Chartwells in 2005. Privatization is not good for student health and
safety – with outsourcing, high turnover and substandard wages and inadequate benefits - Ann Arbor Schools will lose experienced, qualified workers and children supervisors we know and trust with our children. Food will be served by inexperienced employees who can't afford health care. Not only will food quality be adversely affected, but children will be exposed to unnecessary and destabilizing staff turnover.
The Chartwell experiment of 100% privatization with low-wage workers failed in nearby Ypsilanti . The Washtenaw County Inspector reported life-threatening safety violations by the outside vendor. This was reported in the Ann Arbor News. This is a health and safety issue.
Workers should make a living wage – the privatization proposal put workers below the poverty line. Ann Arbor Schools are balancing the budget by breaking the backs of the women in food services, many who are seniors. These women are the lowest paid employees in the district. The workers are providing leadership and are willing to make concessions of 10% in wages
and benefits. Ann Arbor Schools should not unfairly target groups they perceive as having the least amount of political clout. The Schools want a 25 to 30% reduction in wages and benefits. That's too severe. Ann Arbor Schools is considering outsourcing to a foreign company, Campass group. Chartwell is a subgroup of Campass group. There is an adverse economic impact on communities when school districts contract out to other parts of the country or overseas. The employment base is eroded when good jobs are replaced with poor jobs. Resources are also drained from the local economy as profits are transferred outside the community.

Montgomery County (MD) Forum on Green Building
(via email)
The Young Democrats of Maryland (YDM) were proud to join the Montgomery County Young Democrats (MCYD) as they presented their “Ready, Set, Go Green!” Forum on Green Building.
The event brought together a panel of experts, practitioners, and elected officials to discuss what individuals can do to make their homes more energy efficient and green. Participants learned that the Montgomery County government is increasing its efforts to provide financial incentives to county residents who begin using alternative energy sources. State Delegate Bill Bronrott spoke of state initiatives for tax incentives to encourage residents to go green at home and on the road.
In addition to the changes in energy use, attendees were updated on the green building industry. Jason Holstine, owner of Amicus Green Building Center, explained that going green at home is not necessarily more expensive, especially in the long-run. Jason shared that as more builders and contractors within the industry learn the tools, the learning curve shrinks and green building is becoming no more expensive to implement at home then high-end home improvement products. David Pratt of the U.S. Green Building Council of Maryland discussed the LEED Certification program, including the development of a residential program.
The forum was well attended by Young Democrats from around the state, community activists, and the public. Excerpts and pictures from the forum will be available soon on our website: www.mcyd.org
Easy and helpful hints included:
- Purchasing LED Light bulbs, although even better technology will soon be released. LED light bulbs produce almost no heat providing incredible energy savings, including utility bills.
- Unplugging utilities when not in use, including entertainment units. Put all of your entertainment units onto a surge protector and just turn off the surge protector when you are not using the appliances, especially when you leave for the night.
- Have an energy audit conducted on your home. Many utility companies can conduct one for you, even online.

Wood County (WV) YD's Awarded for 3,000 Crosses Visibility Program
By Rod Snyder (WV)
APRIL 21, 2007, HUNTINGTON, WV – The Wood County chapter of the West Virginia Young Democrats received an award today for Most Outstanding Project or Event hosted by a local chapter during the 2006 calendar year. The group planted over 3,000 white crosses on a large hill visible from Route 50 in Wood County. Each cross symbolizes a soldier who has died during the war in Iraq.
John Gainer, immediate past president of the Wood County Young Democrats, was on hand to accept the award at the WVYD 2007 state convention in Huntington. He referred to the hillside as a “peace memorial,” which nearly two-dozen local Young Democrats helped erect last year. More crosses continue to be added as the death toll climbs.
The memorial has garnered significant media attention from around the state, including several newspaper and television reporters on hand last fall during the dedication ceremony.

Young Democrats of Illinois Awards
(cross-posted from email from Martin Flowers (IL) )
Community Service and the Young Democrats
For the past two years, the Young Democrats of Illinois and our chapters have been building our community service program. One chapter has stood out above the rest because of their low level approach to community service. The efforts of the Cook County Young Democrats have created a model for us as a state. They have participated in a community outreach program through Habitat For Humainty, and with Common Wealth Edsion they have particpated in helping to make a differnce for disadvantaged people. However they really took an unprecedented approach when they teamed up with the Chicago Bears and hosted a concession stand where all the procedes were donated to chairity. Building strong working relationships with community out reach is the corner stone of thier program. At this years Dinner, the Cook County Young Democrats will be honorded for their efforts as our County Chapter of the Year.
People Who Make A Differnce
At this years dinner we are honorded to present for the the 2007 Lou Lang Community service awards to Quencita Archer and Aja Jackson. Quencita has built her young democratic service fund-raising and participating in both the labor caucus and the Young Democratic Women to host town hall events across the state, set up fundraising opportunites, and working to help solidify a stronger working relationship for young people. Quencita also serves as the treasurer of the Young Democrats of Illinois.
Aja Jackson has displayed leadership in working with the Cook County young democrats by helping to promote the Common Wealth Edsion project and helping to organize the Young Democrats of Governor'sD ay event. Aja is always willing to pitch in.
We are honored to salute Quncity and Aja with the Lou Lang Community service award.
Call to Arms
This year two people really answered the call for the Young Democrats of Illinois. Katrina Deutsche and Kouri Marshall with be receiving the Rookie of the Year at his years Spring Kickoff Dinner.
Katrina is the Will County Young Democrats President and was instrumental in helping one of our fellow young democrats, John Pavich for Congress. Katrina and her chapter also supported two of her boosters to election on the county level. Whether it was braving the weather, or the long hours at headquaters, Katrina always helped her local chapter. Working as an ambassador on behalf of the YDI excutive board, Katrina supported several Illinois chapters with advice and web consultation. Katrina is one of the bright stars and a future leader for the Democratic Party of Illinois.
Kouri Marshall is the Legastive Director for the Young Democrats of illinois and the President of the Jackson County Chapter. Kouri has traveled all over the state to speak with local county chairs and has worked coordinating a strong working relationship for the Young Democrats of Illinois and the State Party. Working to organzie the Govonors Day booth, and co-ordinating new Chapters, Kouri has built many working relationships. Working with "All poltics are local," Kouri has built a strong foundation and coalition of county chapters in the 19th Congressional District by working to promote the chapter revolution on behalf of Executive Directors.
Executive Board Member of the Year
Young Democrats are proud to honor Robert Baren as the excutive board member of the year. Rob has represented the Young Democrats in many capacites on behalf of the executive Board. It is through his guidance and willingness to travel across the state that has helped to promote the Young Democratic Program and has been his hallmark of public service. Always willing to go the extra mile, he has helped such programs as the South Chicagoland Young Democrats. Robert has set the bar by reaching out to help spread the message on behalf of the Young Democrats, and we are honorded to award him excutive officer of the year.
Caucus of the Year
The YDI progressive action caucus has served as a strong community organization on behalf of the Young Democrats. Supporting such notable events as Earth Day, Immigration Rallies, and working to defend civil rights has been the hallmark of public service to the Young Democrats of Illinois. With a membership of over 200 members, the Progressive Action Caucus is working to promote a strong working relationship with the progressive community and the Democratic Party.
Young Democrats Lifetime achievement
This years award goes to Representative Connie Howard, who has worked to support the Young Democrats on a Local, State, and National Level. We are honored to call her one of our biggest supporters.
Young Democrats Booster Club
The Young Democrats of Illinois Booster Club is proud to award this years award to two members who have gone on to help act as mentors for the newer members of the YDI organzation. We are proud to honor Tom Watsan and Brian Cross for their Dedication and service
Tom Watson serveed as a past President of the Young Democrats of Illinois, and helped lay the Foundation for the YDI to be named state chapter of the year by the Young Democrats of America.
Brian Cross served the past two years as a key adivsor to Chris Golloway who is President of the Young Democrats of America. Through Brian's efforts, he has supported Young Democrats on all levels and has been an inspirational leader for our new members.
We are honored to Welcome them to the Young Democrats Booster Club. This years awards will be handed out by John Crawford head of the YDI Booster Club.
YDI Salutes State Chapter of the Year
We are proud to announce that the South Chicagoland Young Democrats will be honored at this years Spring Kickoff Dinner. As, the first high school chapter in the state, the South Chicagoland young democrats have distinqushed themselves through public service. By creating a succesful chapter that is being seen across the nation as one of the models for approaching the high school kids, the South Chicago land Young Democrats represent the core princpals we look for in future leaders. They have worked to promote community service and help to create a training ground for the Young Democrats has been the succes of this chapter. Seeing members graduation and join the College Democrats to help promote and forge a working relationship with our friends at the College Democrats, has been one of greatest successes of the progarm. We are honored to salute the South Chicagoland Young Democrats as our State Chapter of the Year.

Democrats Work mobilizes Democrats to perform community service . . . as Democrats. Democrats Work partners with Democratic organizations throughout Georgia to help connect Democrats with visible, tangible service projects in their communities - such as cleaning up parks and neighborhoods, working at food banks, building houses, sponsoring basketball tournaments, and helping at church bake sales. Through this service-based approach, Democrats Work promotes Democratic values at the local level, showing our neighbors that Democrats work hard to improve their communities every day, not just at election time.

Program Idea: Convention Food Drive
Dear Young Dem,
If you were able to make it down to Columbus this past January for our winter meeting, you are already aware that we are currently working to create a community service organization within our membership. If you couldn't make it - here's a quick recap...
OYD Cares is a recently-created program that encourages chapters to participate in community service activities to (1) increase their public presence and visibility, and (2) provide meaningful activities for members - and potential members - during non-campaign seasons.
While this program is still in its beginning stages, we sincerely hope that local chapters will come on board with the idea, so we can show the many good things happening around the state with our members.
Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we have decided that we will not be able to complete an OYD Cares service event on the day of the annual state convention (this Saturday, March 31st). However, we still feel that is important to kick off this program the right way, so here's the plan:
Because we are unable to bring everyone from the convention to a soup kitchen or trash cleanup, we are hoping that each member who is coming to Columbus can bring one can of food with them to the convention.
With Easter, Passover, and other spring holidays quickly approaching, shelters and food pantries are in desperate need of supplies and donations. While our humble donation of canned goods to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank probably won't set any records, it will let others know that our members are more than just political junkies and future politicians.
The bottom line is this: OYD Cares is an easy way that we can all come together to make a difference. If you have any questions about participating in the program or regarding the canned foods drive, please feel free to contact me by emailing jamal@ohioyd.org.
Of course, if you would like to bring more than one canned good to the convention per member, we're not going to stop you - in fact, it could be interesting to see which chapters can bring the most items for donation...do I hear a challenge?
Either way, we hope to see you this weekend!
See you Saturday-
Shandell Jamal

Doing Good in Your Neighborhood: Young Dems make hygene packs in Katrina region
Submitted by Anna Weisfeiler (MA)
Jackson, Mississippi, Young Democrats from across the country had more on their minds than just the recent sweeping Democratic victory and organizational business. Beyond simply learning about their host state, YDA members wanted to give back to the community they were visiting and help those affected by the Katrina. Although Jackson mostly received only wind damage, the scar of the experience is still there with southern part of the states entirely devastated.
Mississippi’s co-chair of the Fall conference, corralled young Dems to meet the challenge. Luring people in with the opportunity for a good deed and the ability to keep an eye on their college football games, Young Dems from around the country gathered in a small back room of the Marriott hotel to put together hygiene kits for a local area homeless shelter.
“YDA's community service project is truly reflective of our party's bedrock principle of providing assistance to the disadvantaged and less fortunate. Our commitment to aiding those displaced and affected by Hurricane Katrina has nothing to do with gaining political points but is simply a willingness to look beyond ourselves to help others. While our tangible donation will certainly help those persons adversely affected, the service project is even more significant because it represents a silent notation from YDA that, even a year and three months later, we have not forgotten,” said Kenneth Grigsby, President of the Mississippi Young Democrats.
From various items skewed across the room, a conveyer belt like organization of Pennsylvania, Texas, Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York, Washington, and folks from around the country worked together to assemble over 80 kits of shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and other everyday necessities.
This group also understood that “homeless” doesn’t mean you can’t be young, and for those shelters that take families, nearly two-dozen kits were assembled for kids that included educational games, such as hangman, and toys like “My Little Pony” and toy cars.
On top of compiling the kits, ten center pieces were assembled to help shelters create a little bit of cheer for the holiday season. This activity invited participants to be creative in their design and add personal touches to their contributions.
Special thanks to everyone that helped out with the event.
Please let YDA know what community service projects are going on in your state and join us on February 3, 2007 as we discus what young people can do to help fight poverty in America.
